Supervision and Management - How Great Supervisors Do It
When I started as a manager and struggling to figure out how to make good, wise and experienced friend gave me the following good advice. "Find the great," he said, "So tell what they do. Doing the same things and be great, too."
This has become my life's work. Over the last thirty years I have identified great supervisors. I spent time with them, watching what they do. Then I have helped hundreds of other supervisors learn to do the same things.
Supervisors consistently large lead teams to high productivity and high morale. People want to work with and for them. Their leaders count on them and rave about them.
I discovered that something Leo Tolstoy said about families is also true of Supervisors. Supervisors are great all the same, every bad supervisor is bad in its way.
There are thousands of ways to do a bad job as a supervisor. But the big supervisors do the same things in much the same way. And if you learn them, you can get the results they get. Here's a list.
Big understand that supervisors always have two jobs. A task is to accomplish the mission through the group. The other job is to care for your people. Supervisors great success helping people as individuals and as a team.
Great supervisors understand the strengths and limitations of their position. When you become a boss, you have less power than you did before, because the performances are measured by the performance of your team. But you have much more influence.
Supervisors great utility that can monitor, what you say and do, influence the behavior and performance of their team members. They know that they will not succeed all the time, but if they play the odds and do the right things, will always have team success.
Department supervisors are constantly know their people and adjusting their behavior to each individual situation. They are constantly working to improve their communication skills and their knowledge of their people. Most of the ones I've designed a system for both.
Supervisors great set expectations clear and reasonable, and then check for understanding. They know that the five to seven key assignments that each team member must be able to manage, how good each team member is in everyone and how everyone is playing to the strengths of team members.
Supervisors have several great ways to assign work based on the ability and willingness of a subordinate to do a specific job. It's not just different strokes for different folks. It's different strokes for the same people in different situations.
Supervisors great follow-up to see if it is transformed into understanding the behavior and performance. Great supervisors touch base much, that the control behavior for the individual team member situation and preference.
Supervisors great use every contact with a subordinate as an opportunity to coach, advise, correct and encourage. They work hard to find problems and fix them when they are little in advance.
Supervisors are the large majority of their work outside the formal system of documentation. Because they have a lot of influence and identify problems when they are small, informal counseling works most of the time.
When supervisors do not make a big clear transition from informal to formal documentation coaching. They know that this is often perceived as a problem of loyalty by members of the team.
Great supervisors do the hard work necessary to get rid of people who can not or do not perform. They know that no interpreters, especially the nagging, the complainants, and malcontents, Group Performance and moral poison.
Great supervisors work hard to ensure that the consequences with equal performance. Rarely speaks of "motivation" or "attitude". They manage things they can see and measure.
Great supervisors get and give lots of feedback. Praise to encourage a behavior very appreciated. They also solicit feedback from others on their performance and is rigorously self-critical.
This is what the great do. I studied hundreds of supervisors in the course of decades and all do the same things. Choose a great supervisor know, and chances are he or she has them, too.
Now it's up to you. Learn how to do what supervisors do great. Learn how to make yourself. Then a supervisor will be great, too .......
