Some patients face a problem of poor absorption after a Gastric Bypass
Some patients who have had gastric bypass surgery have a problem of poor absorption of vitamins, nutrients, medications, minerals and nutritional supplements, and the main cause is the creation of a bypass of the small intestine. The doctor should be able to assure patients that their medicines, vitamins, minerals and dietary supplements will be absorbed properly after the surgery. In the event that a problem exists, it should be an alternative medication or change the way it manages and prefer liquid medication or a patch. Remember that the success of gastric bypass is due to two factors: 1. The size of the stomach is greatly reduced, which prevents large amounts of food consumed. 2. It "jumps" or performing bypass the first section of the intestine, this section of the intestine is responsible for absorbing much of fats and carbohydrates we consume themselves by not being absorbed by the intestines into the bloodstream and be disposed of.
One drawback of this method is that this section of intestine that has been "skipping" prevents some proteins are absorbed and can lead the patient to be deficient in some vitamins. The patient, after surgery, you should take a multivitamin and a calcium supplement, liquid or powder for better absorption. Also to be considered an early test of bone density and vitamin B12 injections every month. The lack of some of these nutrients in the diet can cause weakness in the hair or teeth, the same that can be solved with proper intake of vitamins. Because of this, the gastric bypass is not recommended for patients who suffer from conditions such as anemia, the best option for these patients is a procedure called gastric sleeve which does not involve modifying gut and therefore maintains the natural absorption of vitamins. Summary: Talk to your doctor and inform him what your best options for weight loss, our multidisciplinary team can guide you and give you all the information you need to decide.
